Amartya Ray

Genre: Indie, Rock 'n' Roll, Singer-songwriter

Location: Kolkata, India

Years Active: 2014 to Present

Amartya’s tryst with music began relatively late when he joined college and had just picked up the guitar. With his band from college: "Whitenoise", he played various college fests and shows, learning on the way. Being a writer and a lover of poetry and literature he had always been inclined towards composing and writing his own songs with his acoustic guitar. He eventually evolved into a singer-songwriter who plays at cafés and at indoor events around the city such as The Doodle Room, Mocha Café, Ta’am, What’s in D Name, etc. Later he learnt the blues harp and incorporated that into his songwriting. He has a wide range of influences and icons ranging from Jim Morrison to the blues legends and rock ‘n’ rollers to Kurt Cobain. But as a singer-songwriter his greatest influence, he says, would be both Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Amartya says he feels, at times, like a chameleon; still searching for his voice as he has strong passion for more than one facet/genre of music as well as for cinema. In his song "Little Man", he writes about that search and the feeling of isolation and alienation of someone waiting on life to begin. He plans to finish writing more songs in order to eventually cut a debut album.
